The Junior Hoddesdon squad were competing in the George Edwards Memorial gala last Saturday. The gala hosted by Hertford Swimming club was held at Haileybury college sports centre Hertford Heath.

This was another chance to trial out the team for the up and coming league galas.

The young squad had a few swimming their debut for the club, mixed with some more experienced gala swimmers. This was ideal for the club to see how the team would fair over the next few months.

The gala was started by Courtney Sibthorpe who in her first gala showed great confidence to swim a new personal best in the girls 9years 25m backstroke.

Following that the club had a brilliant first half winning fourteen out of twenty four races and nine second places. This included wins for Matthew Day, Roya Keswick, Scott King, Rebecca Suzan, Matthew Hallam, Kirstin Meikle and Andrew Goodman.

Tomas Stevens kept up his record of winning every event he has been in during his first two galas. Hayley Warrington was outstanding in her events and won her Under 12 50m freestyle race with a great new personal best. This secured her the girl’s swimmer of the gala.

Louise Dunning achieved another two personal bests in only her second gala for the club, her confidence is growing all the time. Becky Freestone had two personal bests on the night and not to be outdone Sydney Crouch did the same winning her 50m butterfly in a new personal best.

Georgina Fisher continued her good form with two more wins in the girls 25m butterfly and freestyle races. Albert Johnson showed great speed in his relay events and secured a good personal best in his 50m butterfly race, this won him the boy’s swimmer of the gala.

Annie Clark in her first gala overcome all her first race nerves to get a personal best in her U11 25m backstroke race. Oliver Perry won his 9yrs 25m freestyle race with a new personal best and helped his relay team Ben Scott, Cameron Bell and Matthew Day to first place in their freestyle event.

South Herts Trophy Report

Hoddesdon swimming club’s young squad was competing in The South Herts Trophy at Potters Bar pool last Saturday evening.

The gala was hosted jointly by Potters Bar and Cheshunt, the two other clubs competing were Hitchin and Watford.

The gala was off to a perfect start for Hoddesdon when Georgina Fisher claimed first place in the 9yrs 25m freestyle race. She also went on to get a personal best and a first place in the butterfly event. Further personal bests quickly followed for Cameron Bell, Sydney Crouch, Ben Scott, Matthew Hallam, Hayley Warrington and Andrew Goodman.

By the half way point the team had won 12 of the 24 events and confidence was flying high. The first relays were excellent with the club winning five out of eight and coming second in the other three. Great swims from Cameron Icelli, Wallace West, Holly Charles, Jessica Souras, Kane Hagley King and Luke Broughal ensured the relays went Hoddesdon’s way.

In the second half Phoenix Page, Albert Johnson and Rebecca Suzan all achieved a second personal best of the evening, with Rebecca winning both of her races.

First time novices Louise Dunning and Becky Crowther both swam new personal bests in their individual events and Louise went on to claim girls swimmer of the gala after her relay swims with Becky, Cameron Icelli and Georgina Fisher produced a first and second place. Tomas Stevens on his debut for the club swam a superb 25m butterfly race to claim first place and his two relay swims ensured his U11 team won both their freestyle and medley races. This rewarded him with the boys medal for swimmer of the gala.

Further first places were secured by Amy Riddick, Roya Keswick, Matthew Day, David Cole and Scott King.

In the second set of relays Sophie Rose, Jessica Merulla, Harry Burtenshaw and Thomas Scott all swam great legs which also meant we won five and were third in the other three.

The Eric Penwill Trophy Gala

Our young team travelled to Southbury Road Leisure centre on Saturday 16th February. The gala was excellent for our young and inexperienced swimmers and combined with our more experienced Squad we achieved good results.

This was an unusual gala with all relay events, so every swimmer got some good practice on starts and takeovers.

Every one of the team gave their all and competing in an eight team gala in a big pool was also good experience.

We had good results right from the start and every swimmer was achieving new personal bests, this kept us in the top three up to halfway.

As the gala was all one length relays it was very fast moving and exciting for the supporters and teams.

The second half continued with great swims and kept the pressure on Anaconda and Edmonton.

The team kept putting in great swims and climbed into a clear second place behind Anaconda.

Georgina Fisher and Albert Johnson were awarded swimmers of the gala for some outstanding swims.

Special mentions to Max King, Oliver Perry and Eleanor Buckle on their debuts, they swam superbly.

All the team were fantastic and a credit to the club.

Great support from all of them and they all deserve a mention: Jade Kersey, Becky Freestone, Cameron Icelli, Matthew Day, Holly Charles, Francesca Bannon, Sophie Rose, Roya Keswick, Oliver Shasha, David Cole, Mickey Waters, Kirstin Meikle, Sarah Cutts, Ceila Wighton, Luke Broughal, Harry Burtenshaw, Kane Hagley-King, Tara Keswick, Alice Cole, Charlotte Cole, Jes Waters, Chris Smith, Andrew Goodman and Jordan Icelli. Well done!
