  • Report on National Swimming League Round 1

The Club got off to a promising start in the first round of the 2008 National Swimming League at Southbury Road on Saturday 11th October. They lived up to the team manager and coach’s expectations by achieving a well earned 3rd position in the company of some very strong opposition from most of the other seven competing teams. Our swimmers faired well in almost every event recording 6 first, 7 second, 6 third and 12 fourth places. Considering that in the women’s open events our regular swimmers were unable attend and our 15/U girls had in addition to their own events to swim up, this was a commendable achievement. As we have come to expect from this league, each club has to fight hard to retain its position in Division 1 and on Saturday this was no exception. Three of the teams competing in the gala had finished above Hoddesdon in the 2007 League Table and it is to the team’s credit that the club finished above them on this occasion. This is a positive sign that if the team can maintain this form the club should improve on its 2007 league position of twelfth place.

The first Hoddesdon winner of the evening was Karl Batorski in the 200m IM and he followed this up later with a win the 100m breastroke. The third and fourth wins of the gala were achieved by Tomas Stevens in the 50m backstroke and the 50m butterfly. Not to be outdone, the girls recorded their wins in the 50m breastroke where Hayley Warrington stormed to a decisive victory and Lucy Charles made it the sixth win in the 100m freestyle. The seven second places were achieved in the boy’s 10-11years freestyle and medley relays, men’s open medley relay, girl’s 15/U medley relay and the men’s open 6x2 freestyle relay. Individual second places were achieved by Emma Warrington in girl’s 15/U and the ladies open 100m breastroke events.

Outstanding Individual performances on the night resulted in 15 new personal best times being set, 4 of which were also club records. The relay teams also recorded 3 new club records. It is important to note that all swimmers who competed swam well to form being close to achieving their previous personal best times. The swimmers who attained new personal best times were:

Lucy Charles in the 200m IM + CR, Karl Batorski in the 200m IM + CR and 100m breastroke +CR, Chris Smith in the 100m breastroke and 100m butterfly, Hayley Warrington in the 50m butterfly and 50m breastroke + CR, Charlie Stevens in the 50m breastroke, Kiera Sullivan in the 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly, Ryan Wolfe in the 100m backstroke, Chris Stevens in the 100m butterfly, Chris Smith in the 100m butterfly, Shona Costello in the 50m freestyle, Josh Arnold in the 100m breastroke and Annie Groome in the 100m freestyle.

The relay teams who set new club records were: girls 10-11yrs 4x2 Freestyle relay, girl’s 15/U 4x2 Freestyle relay, girl’s 15/U 4x2 Medley relay, Ladies Open 6x2 Freestyle relay and Men’s Open 6x2 freestyle relay.

The swimmer of the gala awards went to Hayley Warrington and Chris Smith. Team Manager Mark, Head Coach Janet and team Captain Stuart wish to say congratulations to all members of the team for a job well done.

The Results were as follows:

1st Camden Swiss Cottage 359 points, 2nd Shiverers 273 points, 3rd Hoddesdon 248 points, 4th Teddington 226 points, 5th West Suffolk 218 points, 6th Harrow and Wealdstone 215 points, 7th Stevenage 154 points and 8th Westminster 81 points.
