     10th November 2007 – London Division Round 2

Hoddesdon’s squad travelled to Southbury Road Leisure centre, Enfield on Saturday 10th November for the second round of their Speedo league division one campaign.

We arrived at the pool with a great team spirit and plenty of confidence after our brilliant first round performance. We also knew this was going to be another tough evening, as all division one galas are. Top clubs from Camden and Harrow were also competing, along with old rivals Shiverers and Anaconda.

The gala started as usual with the 200m individual medley races, in which Saffron Ardren and John Ayres achieved 6th places (both swimming up an age group). The first relays were a mixed bag with good swims from Emma Riddick, Harry Burtenshaw, Jed Ardren and Imogen Bell. The boys under 16 team John Ayres, Josh Arnold, Paul O’Doherty and Ben Mason broke the club record in their 4x2 Freestyle relay and went on to achieve the same in the medley later on. A great 3rd place was secured by Becky Cooper, Emma Warrington, Lucy Charles and Saffron Ardren in the open ladies medley relay. The under 13 boys team also finished 3rd in their medley relay with good swims from Josh Arnold, Jed Ardren, Callum Bedding and Lewis Hinkley-Keens.

Highlights of the individual events were our two victories both from Lucy Charles in her under 16 100m backstroke and swimming up in Ladies open 100m freestyle (with a new personal best time). She was in great form all evening with personal bests from her relays as well. Personal bests were also achieved by Sharn Verrier in her under 14 100m backstroke & 100m butterfly races. Harry Burtenshaw had a good night with a new personal best in his under 12 50m breaststroke and good pb’s in his relays. Ben Mason was also busy swimming in both the under 16 and open men’s relays, as well as three individual events. He had a great second place in his under 16 100m freestyle and 3rd in the 100m backstroke; he also had a good 4th place in the open 100m backstroke. Josh Arnold again swam well with an excellent personal best and second place in his under 14 100m backstroke. He had a busy evening in the relays with five events swimming up two age groups as well. Sydney Crouch swimming in her first Speedo league gala just missed her personal best with a good swim in the under 12 50m butterfly.

Throughout the gala we were well positioned; up until the final relays we could have still finished anywhere between 3rd and 7th.Camden seemed clear favourites to win and Harrow were in second, with us in the following five and Acton trailing in 8th place. Although we didn’t have as many personal bests as last time the team spirit and will to win never diminished. This helped us secure a good 5th place overall and should set us up for a thrilling final gala in December.

Well done again to the whole squad, even those who didn’t get a mention this time, you proved yet again that small clubs can compete on the big stage.

Mark (proud team manager) Charles.

    13th October 2007 – London Division Round 1

Hoddesdon arrived in Ipswich for the first round of this year’s competition with some trepidation as the team contained no swimmers in the ‘Ladies Open’ category.  Team Manager Mark Charles was hopeful of finishing 5th or 6th in the 8 team gala provided that the swimmers could pull out some big PBs.  In fact, the Hoddesdon team exceeded all expectations to finish 3rd.

Up against some strong teams in the toughest competition of the year, the Hoddesdon swimmers put in excellent performances throughout the gala, challenging last year’s league winners Ipswich in some events and occasionally bettering them. A total of 37 PBs and 2 club records were posted by the Hoddesdon Team.

Former World Champion Karen Pickering put in a cameo performance for Ipswich in the Ladies freestyle relay and continues to be an inspiration for many swimmers in the league as well as her Ipswich team-mates.

 Congratulations to:

Holly Gannon on being swimmer of the gala and her two first place finishes in the under 14s 100m Fly and 100m Free

Jessica Waters for swimming up 2½ age groups and putting in a creditable performance with a huge PB in the Ladies Open 200m Individual Medley

Mens Open Relay Team for soaking the lead referee

Josh Arnold for topping up his phone credit using incentive payments from his parents

All of the Swimmers and Coaches on a fantastic performance
