East Region ASA Winter Short Course Meet 7th and 8th November 2009

An early start for five Hoddesdon Swimmers last weekend, took them to Norwich UEA for the East Region winter championships. The competition was set as short course over two days, with sessions running virtually back to back. It was a tough meet for swimmers with no age groups, all swimming as open. The best of the East region were there, so the Hoddesdon swimmers knew they would have to be on top form.

After the National Anthem the racing commenced and the swimmers were really fired up. David Kellaway (swimming under dual recognition, Bishop Stortford and Hoddesdon) and Paul O’Doherty were first in the men’s 50 Butterfly. David made the B Final and Paul’s swim moved him up seven places in the rankings and was reserve for the B Final. David continued to be busy over the weekend swimming seven events in all, making the final in four and winning the B Final in the 100m Backstroke. Although personally he hoped for better times the quality of swims were excellent and very close to his personal best`s. Paul was swimming in his first winter champs and swam two excellent butterfly races. As usual he gave every single bit of energy he could muster and recorded a new person best in the 50m fly and improved his ranking in the 100m by nine places.

Lucy Charles swam next in her 50m Backstroke she qualified for the Final ranked 3 and hoped for a medal spot later in the day. Overall she had an excellent meet; she went on to retain her 1500m Freestyle title smashing her personal best by twelve seconds. She also won the 800m Freestyle with a great final 50m finish and she won further bronze medals in both the 50m Backstroke & 50m Butterfly. She achieved four personal bests overall and finished 7th in a very close 50m freestyle race.

Emma Warrington had a similar start in her 100m Breaststroke qualifying for the final ranked 3rd, although she thought it could have been faster. She went on to secure a bronze medal in the 100m, but went one better in her 50m Breaststroke. Unfortunately illness got the better of her overnight and although she still competed in the 200m Breaststroke and made the final, it was too much for her to win and further awards.

Hayley Warrington was one of the youngest competing from all the clubs present. She swam a great personal best in her 100m freestyle and made the B final for the 50m Breaststroke. Her final was a great swim and she won the B final, which was a fantastic achievement.

After two long days for Head Coach Janet Warrington, she reflected on a tiring weekend with ups and downs due to illness. But with great swims from all she said “more great experience for our swimmers and hopefully this will inspire others to qualify next year, this weekend they have put Hoddesdon SC on the East Region swimming map once again”
