ASA EAST REGION YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008
Four Hoddesdon swimmers travelled to Norwich over the bank holiday weekend to compete in the ASA East Region Youth Championships held at the University of East Anglia 50meter pool.
The busiest swimmer was 14 year old Lucy Charles having qualified for 9 events. Her first events on Saturday morning were 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle & 50m Butterfly.
She qualified for finals in 100m Back & 50m Fly & got a national qualifying time for 50m freestyle although she just missed out on the final coming 9th.
In the finals later that day she swam an awesome length of butterfly, beating her heat time & claimed silver for her efforts. She swam a good 100m backstroke final & finished in 6th position.
On Sunday morning Lucy swam in the heats of 50m Backstroke & 200m Freestyle & qualified for finals in both events.
She swam a great length of backstroke to claim 3rd spot & a well deserved bronze medal. Within 10 minutes she was back on the blocks for the 200m freestyle final. She swam a brilliant race to claim 3rd position, bettering her heat time & smashing her personal best & thus bettering her national qualifying time that she had achieved earlier this season.
Bank holiday Monday morning saw Lucy back in the pool bright & early for what was to be her toughest day of the competition with 4 events to compete in. She made the final of the 200m Individual medley & 100m freestyle. She swam a fantastic 400m freestyle race smashing her personal best by a massive 4 seconds, claiming bronze & bettering her National qualifying time. The 400m Freestyle took its toll on her 200m Backstroke & she had to settle for 9th place.
In the finals that afternoon Lucy pulled it out the bag yet again & bettered her heat time in the 200m Individual medley, claimed 3rd position & a bronze medal & secured yet another National qualifying time. Her last race of the competition was the 100m freestyle final. It was a very close race & although Lucy bettered her heat time & gained yet another National long course qualifying time she had to settle for 4th position.
Lucy will get back into training & start to focus on the 8 events that she has qualified for at the ASA National competition held in Sheffield at the end of July.
Emma Warrington qualified for 3 events. On Saturday morning she swam a good 200m Breaststroke & claimed 10th position. On Sunday morning she swam a brilliant 100m breaststroke, smashing her personal best, and claimed her place in the final.
Later that day she swam another good race but had to settle for 5th position.
Emma swam her favourite event the 50m Breaststroke on Bank holiday Monday morning. She stormed down the pool in the heat to finish in second position with a new personal best & a well deserved place in the final. In the final Emma gave it everything, swimming even faster than her heat, at one point she looked like she was going to finish 1st but was just touched out into silver medal position.
Holly Gannon qualified for 4 events. On Saturday she swam a good 50m freestyle in a personal best time. She then went on to swim a personal best in 50m Butterfly & finished 23rd. On Sunday she swam in the 200m free and then on Monday she swam a good 100m freestyle to finish in 47th position.
Ben Mason joined the girls on Bank Holiday Monday & swam his favourite event the 100m Freestyle. He beat his previous best time & finished 23rd.
Coach Janet Warrington was proud of her swimmers achievements over the weekend & is looking forward to take her younger swimmers to Norwich for the ASA East Region BAGCAT championships in June.
