The team travelled to the “Venue “ Sports Centre at Borehamwood on Saturday 8th January to compete in the first round of this year’s events and what a night it turned out to be. With teams from Hatfield, Stevenage, Harpendon, Hertford and Cheshunt making up the opposition it soon became evident that the gala was going to be anything but a placid affair. After 12 events Hoddesdon were placed 4th with some work still to do if they were to improve their standing. After 24 events things had improved significantly for Hoddesdon and they were placed 2nd behind Hatfield but with only a slight lead over 3rd and 4th place Harpendon and Stevenage. After 36 events Hoddesdon had widened the gap over the 3rd and 4th placed teams and had a firm grip on 2nd place behind Hatfield. In the final 13 events of the gala Hoddesdon maintained their impressive form to end the gala in a comfortable 2nd place, but the highlight of the evening without doubt was the final event which was the mixed 8x2 Freestyle Squadron Relay. This event always generates great excitement and tonight was no exception, it was neck and neck between Hoddesdon and Hatfield as each of the team relay swimmers entered the water and right down to the last swimmer on the last leg there was nothing to choose between them. As the final swimmers went down the last 25 metres amidst all the cheering from the spectators and with 5 meters to go it was still impossible to predict who would win, but with a final supreme effort the Hoddesdon swimmer touched first to snatch victory. The performance and commitment of all the Hoddesdon swimmers was of the highest standard. The more senior members of the squad maintained and, on many occasions exceeded the coaches expectations whilst the younger members having gained from past competitions were brilliant. On that performance the club can look forward to a very successful year for our swimmers both in club galas and in open events. We were drawn against our old rivals Bishop’s Stortford and Watford so the gala had all the makings of being a closely contested battle for the top three positions. Our team swam well considering that this was their first competition after a long break from training over the Christmas period. In individual events we achieved 9 first places, 3 second places and 3 third places and in relay events we scored 5 first places and 6 second places. However our old rivals were also performing consistently well and despite a strong performance from our team resulting in achieving 8 Pb’s and 1 club record we had to settle for a slightly disappointing 3rd place on the night. Never the less every member of the girl’s and boy’s team should feel pleased with their performance and they can look forward to the remaining two rounds of the competition knowing that now we are back in full time training we can achieve the results that the team is capable of.
